If you have ever opened your disk management utility and noticed that Microsoft Office occupies an alarming portion of your drive, you are not imagining things. Depending on the version, configuration, and how long the installation has been active, Office can consume anywhere from 10GB to well over 50GB of storage. For users running lean SSDs — common on mid-range laptops sold across the US — that footprint is not trivial.

The frustrating reality is that a significant share of that space is not occupied by software you are actively using. It is occupied by residual update packages, dormant language packs, accumulated cache files, and redundant installation components that Microsoft retains for various recovery and compatibility reasons. Understanding what each category actually is — and which ones are genuinely safe to remove — is the first step toward recovering meaningful storage without destabilizing your setup.

Breaking Down the 50GB: Where the Space Actually Goes

Before deleting anything, it helps to understand the anatomy of an Office installation. The storage footprint typically breaks down across several distinct categories:

Core application binaries account for the largest single share. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and any additional apps you have installed each carry their own executable files, DLLs, and supporting libraries. On a full Microsoft 365 installation with all flagship apps, this alone can reach 8–12GB.

Language packs and proofing tools are frequently the most overlooked source of bloat. Office installs proofing tools — spell checkers, grammar engines, hyphenation dictionaries — for dozens of languages simultaneously. If you only write in English, the French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Japanese proofing packages are consuming space without providing any benefit. These packs can collectively occupy 2–6GB.

Update delivery caches are perhaps the most surprising contributor. When Office updates itself through Click-to-Run or Windows Update, it downloads full or partial update packages and stores them locally before applying them. These cached packages often remain on disk long after the update completes. On a machine that has been running Office for two or more years with monthly updates, this cache can swell to 5–10GB or more.

Temporary and working files accumulate in several locations. Office generates autosave files, unsaved document recovery drafts, print spooler remnants, and clipboard cache data during normal operation. These are stored across multiple directories, including the user's AppData folder, and are rarely cleaned up automatically.

Telemetry and diagnostic logs are generated continuously in the background. While individual log files are small, they accumulate over time and, in enterprise environments with verbose logging enabled, can reach several gigabytes.

Redundant installation source files are retained by Click-to-Run deployments to support repair operations. These are legitimate components, but some can be pruned if your organization manages deployments centrally.

Step-by-Step: Identifying What Is Taking Up Space

Before removing anything, measure the current state so you have a meaningful before/after comparison.

  1. Open Settings → System → Storage on Windows 10 or 11. Select your primary drive, then click Apps & features to see Office's reported footprint. Note this number.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office and C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared and check their sizes using File Explorer's properties panel.
  3. Open File Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office, and note the folder size. This is where temporary files, autosave drafts, and user-level cache accumulate.
  4. Check C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Office for additional shared data.
  5. Use a free disk analysis tool such as WinDirStat or TreeSize Free to generate a visual map of these directories. This makes it significantly easier to identify which subfolders are the primary offenders.

What You Can Safely Remove

Language packs you do not use. Navigate to any Office application, open File → Options → Language. Review which display and proofing languages are installed. Remove any that are not part of your workflow. You can also remove them via Settings → Apps → Microsoft 365 → Modify → Add or Remove Features and deselecting unneeded language packs. Removing four or five unused language packs can recover 1–3GB immediately.

Update cache files. The Click-to-Run update cache is stored at C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\Updates. Files in this folder that are older than your current Office version can generally be removed safely. Do not delete the folder itself — only the contents of older subdirectories. Verify your current version number first through File → Account → About [App] in any Office application.

Temporary Office files. The folder C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Temp contains many temporary files from multiple applications, including Office. Files with extensions such as .tmp, ~WRL, ~WRD, and ~Excel are working files from previous sessions. Those that are not currently open can be deleted. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility (search for it in the Start menu), which safely identifies and removes these files without requiring manual navigation.

Autosave recovery files from closed documents. Office stores autosave versions of documents you were editing. If you have not had an unexpected crash recently and all your documents are intact, navigate to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word (and equivalent folders for Excel and PowerPoint) and delete .asd files from sessions that are no longer needed.

Telemetry logs. If you are not in an IT environment that relies on Office telemetry data, the log files located in C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Telemetry can be cleared. You can also disable telemetry logging going forward through Group Policy or the Office Telemetry Dashboard settings.

What You Must Not Delete

Some files look expendable but are not. Removing them can cause application errors, failed launches, or broken features that require a full repair or reinstallation to fix.

Realistic Storage Recovery: What to Expect

After a thorough cleanup on a machine running Office for two or more years, it is realistic to recover the following:

In aggregate, users frequently recover 5–12GB from a single cleanup session. On a 256GB SSD — still common on consumer and business laptops sold in the US — that is a meaningful percentage of total capacity.

Keeping Storage Under Control Going Forward

A one-time cleanup helps, but Office will rebuild much of this bloat over time if left unmanaged. Schedule a quarterly review of the AppData directories. Consider enabling Storage Sense in Windows Settings, which can be configured to automatically delete temporary files on a defined schedule. For IT administrators managing multiple machines, the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) offers configuration options that limit which language packs are deployed at installation, preventing unnecessary accumulation from the outset.

Microsoft Office is an exceptionally capable productivity platform, but its storage behavior rewards users who understand what is running beneath the surface. With a clear map of what each file category represents and a disciplined approach to removal, recovering significant disk space is straightforward — and entirely safe when done correctly.
